Back in 2009 Red Sky July (great band name by the way) featuring husband and wife team Shelly Poole and Ally McErlaine alongside former The Alice Band singer Charity Hair were about to record this album, when Ally suffered a brain aneurysm and was seriously ill for a year. Thankfully he recovered and thankfully the album still came to fruition, as this is an impressive debut.
Instantly the harmonies of Poole (formerly Alisha’s Attic) and Hair’s vocals unite beautifully, floating in unison across dreamy acoustic landscapes. Apparently each track was recorded live, with the producer (Rory Carlile) hoping that would add to the vulnerability of the recordings. Certainly the likes of Already Gone and Green Country Lanes have an attractive frailty but are also understated in a good way, allowing the melodies to slowly absorb on each listen.
Evening Song’s gentle violin lends it a far more country feel, and here the girls sound more and more like the now defunct Dixie Chicks. Lyrically it won’t win awards with simple affectionate refrains like “you’re my heart, you’re my home” but it’s catchy alright! Loving You’s Easy follows a similar template while a change of gear at White Feather gives us ethereal vocals over plaintive guitar.
The fact this album might not have been recorded at all, adds to its majesty in a way but to give too much emphasis to that backdrop would detract from the quality of the music. Here’s hoping Red Sky July are more than a one off experiment, especially as there’s a welcome outing for Skipper-dee-doo-dah on final track The Happiest Girl In The Whole USA.
